Another element to getting the word out was our work situations. Jennifer worked at the hospital and was only working a couple days a week. Her office was happy for her and was willing to work with her on the scheduling of appointments. My work had experience the ups and downs of wanting kids - they were all excited about the news. Having multiples puts the pregnancy at high risk. The plan was to go to the doctor every two weeks during the first and second trimester and then increasing frequency during the third. So the potential to miss work was high and my employer was willing to accommodate our needs.
Morning Sickness?
Try morning sickness x 3. The day after the camping trip Jennifer started getting sick. It was slow at first and then increased to severe morning sickness - more like all day and all night sickness. She could not eat or drink anything. The first trip to the ER was just a nice quick fix on fluids and some meds to help the nausea. It did not help. She started loosing weight and she did not have any to lose. To make matters worse - every time she got up to puke - I went to the pantry to eat. I guess I was trying to compensate for what she was not eating. She had home health care come and give her fluids and set her up with a med pump. It did not help.

We finally ended up back in the ER and they kept her for a few nights. She had lost 10% of her body weight and we were at a stage where all the books said she should have gained 30-40 pounds. She had become physically and mentally drained and we were only at week 18. The hospital stay got her back to feeling a little better, but she never returned to having an appetite. I tried everything to get her to eat - we had several arguments along the way. She final started eating very small meals - often. She did start to gain weight and the doctors were happy with her status. They said not to worry about what the books were saying about weight gain - every preg is different - and most of them are written by women that just wanted to justify the 60 lbs they gained and then could not loose (our doctor was a man of course - no women would ever say that). Through all this Jennifer could not work and had to resign early. She was basically on bed rest. I could get her to church - sometimes. I could get her out to eat - occasionally. But no shopping - she did not even want to - just no energy. She did end up gaining a total 20 lbs.
Once again - I will continue later - stay tuned for Part 3
